I suffered a facial fracture 15 years ago in an auto accident and had a nasal "blow out" as well. Between that time 15 years ago and 23 December 2008 (the date I underwent a tonsillectomy), I endured chronic drainage in my throat/sinus area, and as such suffered approximately 3-5 cases of severe throat infection per year. Each infection was treated/cured with an antibiotic (Augmentin). In my opinion, the chronic throat infections were caused by the incessant drainage caused by the damage to facial bone/sinus area cause by the auto accident. Do you concur with my line of reasoning? That is, that the accident-caused facial/sinus damage caused my incessant drainage which caused my throat/tonsils infections. In my view, the need for a tonsillectomy was due to the accident injuries. Please share your thoughts, experience, and ideas. THANK YOU

Hi Nicolas, A simple hearing test (PTA) and a pressure test (impedence) of your ear will confirm if the problem is due to fluid accumulating in your ear or a weakness of nerves of your ear. Fluid can be easily treated with medicines or a procedure (Grommet insertion). Good thing that the MRI has ruled out any tumour.

Hey, im 17 yrs old and I've had hearing loss in my left ear for about 2 years that goes and then comes back but doesn't come back perfect. My symptoms are weird, when my hearing is low and i shake my head i feel the sensation of water in the ear, like a loud thump. I went to one ENT and he gave me prednisone and it didn't help. I had an MRI and they ruled out a tumor. The 2nd time around when i went to another ENT he also prescribed Prednisone but i didnt take it and my hearing came back the next day. The Dr. told me i have mixed hearing loss and that he wants me to go to a neurotologist.

I am still waiting for my app. with the Neurotologist. At this moment i am hopefull since when i ask someone who has hearing loss if they feel fluid in their ear they say no. The fluid symptom is what makes me think there is still hope for my hearing in my left ear to be perfect. Does anyone know what the fluid could be?

Mr Rai,
Surgery is a good choice at your age. REcovery of hearing depends a lot on nature of surgery / surgeon and your current audiogram...

Hi Pam,
She probably has a bit of glue ears. Use decongestant nose drops (like xylometazoline) and anti allergy tablets or syrups (like fexofenadine / cetrizine) before and during such trips. This will keep her nose decongested and prevent her ears from hurting during pressure changes.

Hello,
We have a 9 year old special needs daughter who had a tympanoplasty performed about 2 years ago. Since then, she screams in pain and holds that ear whenever we fly or are in high altititudes, such as the mountains. Is there any reason for this and is there anything we can do to ease her discomfort? Thank you very much in advance.

Sorry Milan, I am not aware of 'swallowing therapy' around there. You need to enquire from Pune practitioners. S

HI JAson
Hydrogen peroxide is fine to be used for a few seconds immediately after surgery. Splitting uvula sounds strange. we always try and keep the uvula not touched...

hello dr, Is it common practice as part of tonsillectomy to pack the oropharynx w/ gauze soaked w/ hydrogen peroxide and to 'split the uvula'? any info would be appreciated.

hi shawna,
its possible that the area is a bit weak and the wound has not completely settled. you just need to be sure that the area has indeed closed up completely (ur dentist or oral surgeon can confirm that). If so, I think its a matter of time before this will settle down.

I had my 2nd molar removed about a year ago by an oral surgeon. After the tooth extraction I had a huge hole going through into my sinus cavity. (which my doctor neglected to tell me). Everytime I took a drink of water or brushed my teeth I would literally have water pouring out of my nose. I went back in for a second surgery to repair the hole, he removed a big chunk of my gum and tried to stitch my cheek to my gum in order to close the hole (which ripped away after the surgery because it tugged everytime I opened my mouth). After the second surgery I began having extreme pressure and pain in the area, and a pocket of tissue that would protrude out of the hole like a balloon (like there was too much pressure and it had no where to go but out of the hole). My oral surgeon told me that it was just a piece of tissue that they had tried to close the hole with (yeah right). I've been thinking alot about it lately and I now believe that the tissue may have actually been my sinus pocket!!! The hole eventually closed on its own a couple of months after the second surgery. All I have left in that area now is scar tissue and my hard pallate!
Ever since then I seem to have constant sinus infections, always with the most pressure/pain on the side where the tooth was removed, and it is always most painful down in the gum area. Could my sinus infections be related to this botched tooth extraction? Should I bring this up to my primary care physician? What would they be able to do about it?
